Simpsons Movie Premiere

This entry was posted July 26th, 2007 and has 2 comments.

That’s right folks. The day many have been awaiting for years is finally here. The Simpsons Movie releases this weekend, but I’ve managed to score a few premiere tickets for tonight at The Senator Theatre.

With all of the hype and well-executed marketing surrounding this movie, I’m sure everyone’s expectations are very high. Speaking of fantastic marketing, the collective genius at Crispin Porter Bogusky have outdone themselves on this campaign. Between converting several 7-11s into Kwik-E-Marts, SimpsonizeMe, and some great TV spots that promote the movie and Burger King, the marketing surrounding this movie has been well thought out and executed.

Less Yesterday and More Today

This entry was posted July 23rd, 2007 and has 2 comments.

I have yet to explain the title of my blog here on Wordpress. That’s most likely because I think it’s pretty self-explanatory. However, today I have decided to go into a bit more detail about this topic.

First, the title itself is a quote from one of my favorite Kevin Devine songs. I saw Kevin play a few months back at Ram’s Head in Baltimore with Brand New and Manchester Orchestra. This was one of the most fun shows I’ve been to and have been listening to KD’s albums a lot since then.

The idea of “less yesterday and more today” really appeals to me. I guess that’s because I tend to be someone that over-analyzes things and find myself getting wrapped up in worry at times. This quote really serves to remind me to deal with today’s issues and not spend time and energy on the past or even too much on the future.

A World of Distractions

This entry was posted July 18th, 2007 and has 3 comments.

How many times are you distracted from what you’re working on in a typical day? What is the longest amount of time you can concentrate without your attention being diverted? What are the things that distract you the most.

Yesterday, I was talking with my buddy Brad about the many distractions that we are provide with in our high-tech world. So I have decided to compile a list of all the things that have distracted me this morning, before noon.

1. Upon first logging on to my computer, Gmail Notifier let me know that I had an important email to read about color options for this season’s kickball tee shirts. Please God don’t let them be red.

The Decemberists with The BSO - updated with video

This entry was posted July 16th, 2007 and has no nomments.

This past Saturday evening I saw The Decemberists play with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra at Merriwether in Columbia, MD. I was lucky enough to receive 2 free tickets from a very generous work acquaintance. We had pretty fantastic seats, probably about 30 rows back. The great seats almost made me not mind paying $9 a beer, almost.

The show was amazing. The Decemberists are great musicians and their sound was only enhanced with the backing of a full orchestra. They played for about an hour, took a 15-minute intermission, then came back for another 40 minutes or so, before one final encore song. As great as the show was, I still wanted more when they were done. An extra 2-song encore would have been perfect.

Oh, the Joys of Summer

This entry was posted July 11th, 2007 and has 7 comments.

Since I’m not going on any extended vacations this summer, I had the closest thing to a vacation this past week. It is such a necessary thing to take time off of work and get out of town, even if just for a few days. Not only was this excursion necessary, but it was probably one of the best 5-day periods I’ve had in a long time. Here’s a quick (well after re-reading this, it’s pretty long and detailed) account of what made this such a great mini-vacation.

Wednesday, July 4 - Independence Day

Thanks to our founding fathers, there was no work on Wednesday. So what do you do on a Wednesday when no one has work? Umm, play softball. Obviously. Nearly 20 good friends got together to play a long, hot, and extremely fun game of softball at the Hamilton baseball fields. There were even a few home runs over the fence. It really brought me back to my days at good old Harford Park little league.

Friends in High Places

This entry was posted July 3rd, 2007 and has no nomments.

This morning, Scooter Libby sure is glad that he’s got friends in high places. Namely, Dick Cheney and George Bush.

In case you didn’t see the news last night, President Bush commuted the portion of Libby’s sentence that required him to spend 30 months in prison. Libby had recently been convicted of lying and obstruction of justice in a CIA leak case.

Regardless of your politics, this kind of action has to upset you. This is not a Republican or Democrat issue as much as it is an issue of the rich and powerful having special benefits that the rest of us do not. Libby, the former chief of staff for Dick Cheney, committed a serious crime and was justly given a prison term of 30 months, a $250,000 fine and probation. He will now only have to deal with the fine, which I’m sure he will be able to afford, and probation.

Whiffleball is the new American Pastime

This entry was posted July 2nd, 2007 and has no nomments.

This spring and summer, my friends and I have been playing whiffleball nearly every Sunday evening. Every week we have a lot of fun and the games have become increasingly competitive and close. In recent weeks, rules have been modified to protect the integrity of the game.

In the beginning of the season, we were using a large black bat that yielded many homeruns. In favor of “small ball”, we retired the black bat and now use the thin yellow bats. This makes the games much lower scoring. Certain players in the league have even perfected the art of bunting in order to get runners on base.

Last night’s game saw my team down 5-0 late in the game. We made a gutsy comeback, but came up short with a 5-4 defeat. Fielding was solid by both teams, and there were only a few, minor baserunning blunders.
