I hate to speak poorly about a Baltimore restaurant, as I think too much of that happens already. However, when the food is as bad as it was last night at Zen West Cafe in Belvedere Square, that is really the only option.
So, on to the story. Last night, I met up with the good people from Tilt Studio and the local design collective they organize, for a happy hour at Ryan’s Daughter. For those of you not from Baltimore, Ryan’s Daughter is a nice, cozy Irish pub with good beer and good food, an excellent choice for a networking happy hour. There are only a few shows that are so funny that they will make me laugh out loud, even when watching them alone. There are even fewer that are worth talking about with your friends or quoting when you’re out. Flight of the Conchords is one of these shows.
This new show from HBO is about 2 guys from New Zealand, Bret and Jermaine, who come to New York to get their band famous. The show follows the sometimes inane details of their daily lives while they try to find gigs to play and women to love. Most of the funniest moments come in their normal conversations or their reactions to day to day life. Or, in their band meetings with their manager Murray or when they’re being stalked by their only fan, Mel.

In the past few months, there seems to have been an explosion in the world of social networks. An arena that was once, and by most reports still is, dominated by MySpace and now Facebook, has spawn countless new social networks. My main question is not whether there is value in each of these sites, but whether any of them have what it takes to survive and grow.
If you’re in the marketing/advertising field, or participate in social networks, you’ve probably noticed somewhat of a decline in your friends’ participation on MySpace. A year or 2 ago, it seems like everyone on MySpace participated daily and spent a lot of time on the site. Lots of people even “collected” friends and bragged about who had the most. Now, the only friend requests I get are from girls who want me to visit their web cams or bands that I’ve never heard of. This isn’t to say that MySpace is finished, they’re still growing at an amazing rate and are adding new features all the time. There’s just been a large contingent of people migrating to Facebook.
I’m one of the people that falls into this category. Just a week or two ago I decided to actually create a Facebook account. It’s not that I had anything against Facebook before, I just didn’t feel like managing another social network account. But, I got bored of never seeing anything new on MySpace, so I took the plunge. There’s also been so much buzz surrounding Facebook in the marketing community this summer. You can’t read any industry site without seeing at least one article claiming that Facebook is the greatest company ever and is taking over the world. Ok, maybe that’s a bit much, but marketing people sure do love talking about the next big thing.

Before anyone freaks out, no, my 50+-year-old parents are not having a baby.
Yesterday I met my “little brother” Tyler as part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters mentor program. Our meeting yesterday couldn’t have gone better. BBBS did a great job matching us. Even though he is only 8, we actually have a lot of similar interests. He’s into all the normal stuff like football, baseball, and basketball, but he also likes to draw, do science experiments and really wants to learn how to snowboard. BBBS also organizes lots of great events so you don’t have to work too hard to find things to do with your Little.
The main reason Tyler’s mom, who seems really nice but is kind of young, wants him to be involved in this program is to have some positive male influence. His dad wasn’t around at all for a while and has just recently started to be a little involved with Tyler again. The only guy he really looks up to is his mom’s brother, who is now in jail.

As of yesterday, I hit the 100-mile mark since I started running again in January. During this time I’ve been using the Nike Plus system. For those of you who don’t know, it’s a chip and sensor that allows your shoes to talk to you iPod Nano and transfer your run data back and forth. Then, you can go to nikeplus.com to log and view all of your runs. It’s a pretty amazing tool and has made finding the motivation to go running much easier.
I used to dislike running. But now, the more I do it, the more I really enjoy it. That’s a tough statement for most people to understand. How could you like running?
