Got my Plane Ticket

I guess this makes it official. Last night I got my non-refundable plane ticket to Shanghai. I’ll be flying American Airlines, leaving on January 31 and returning to the States on February 8. This will give me 7 full days and 2 half-days to spend exploring Shanghai and Beijing.

My flight there leaves at 7:40 am, goes through Detroit and arrives in Shanghai at 3:25 pm. But, with the time change, that 3:25 pm (China time) will actually feel like 2:25 am. So all tolled, I will be traveling for about 18.5 hours. Jet lag anyone?

The plan once we get there is to try to stay up until at least 10 pm their time, which will feel like 11 am on Saturday. It’s pretty confusing, so I’m just going to attempt to adjust as soon as possible.

Special shout-out to the fine US Government workers who got me my passport in less than 2 weeks! Now all I need is a Visa and I’m all set.

Besides all of the awesome traveling, sight-seeing, and Chinese-culture-experiencing that I’ll be doing, I’m actually pretty excited to attempt to document my entire trip on this blog. Hopefully, we’ll take a foray into some more visual media, including lots of photos and video. I’m planning to blog at least once a day to share the experience as well as possible.

If anyone has been to China and has any suggestions, please leave a comment.

That is going to be some crazy jet lag. Remember how messed up we were in Hawaii the first couple of days? I felt like (and looked like) a maniac that first night. What is the time difference here - 11 hours?

13 hours.
What about when we were at Kate’s house that first night. Definitely looked like a maniac.

I just have one word for you - Benedryl.

I don’t know any Chinese. I’m sure Granddad does if you can take the story that goes along with it :~>

That should be a great experience.

Dad

PS - I need the address for Arnold house - I will probably call you when I leave the thing at work.

hey, i’m psyched for you! chinese new year is definitely a fun time to be there. plan to do a lot of quality shopping and eat a lot of good food. i haven’t been to china in years but i’ll ask my mom for suggestions. she was there a year or two ago and might have some good ideas though i’m sure there won’t be a shortage of things to do.

p.s. about the jet lag. that’s weenie mentality. globe trotters don’t take that into account.

Maybe there will be a biathlon you can run.

Says shady at 4:19 pm on December 5th, 2007

Ok, my new mentality will be that there is no such thing as let lag.

If there is a biathlon to be had, I’ll be there.

i’ve done hawaii jet lag and china jet lag and hawaii is def. worse in my opinion. 6 hrs. is a harder adjustment than 12-13hrs. just practice staying up till 2 or 3 am for a week before you come and you’ll already practically be on china time! ;)

i’m super stoked about the visit…got all kinds of peeps workin on stuff for us to do.

Ah, jet lag. i may be the expert in our family. here’s what you do……….nothing……go there and stay up on there schedule the first day and you’ll be fine….but you have to stay up according to what the local time is as soon as you get there. The first day can be rough, but you’ll get through and then be fairly well adjusted. trust me, I know.
