Less Yesterday and More Today
I have yet to explain the title of my blog here on Wordpress. That’s most likely because I think it’s pretty self-explanatory. However, today I have decided to go into a bit more detail about this topic.
First, the title itself is a quote from one of my favorite Kevin Devine songs. I saw Kevin play a few months back at Ram’s Head in Baltimore with Brand New and Manchester Orchestra. This was one of the most fun shows I’ve been to and have been listening to KD’s albums a lot since then.
The idea of “less yesterday and more today” really appeals to me. I guess that’s because I tend to be someone that over-analyzes things and find myself getting wrapped up in worry at times. This quote really serves to remind me to deal with today’s issues and not spend time and energy on the past or even too much on the future.
Of course, Jesus also had some words to share on this subject. “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?…Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Let the day’s own trouble be sufficient for the day.”
And that’s completely true. Each day presents challenges as well as blessings. If we’re too involved in the past, or too anxious about the future, we cannot deal with today.
Hopefully this serves as a reminder to me, and anyone else who finds themselves dealing with worry or anxiety, to embrace today and everything it offers. We cannot change the past and we can only minimally alter the future, so let’s make a conscious effect to, “Let the day’s own trouble be sufficient for the day.”
