Less Yesterday and More Today

The Life and Times of Chris Walbert

Oh, the Joys of Summer

Since I’m not going on any extended vacations this summer, I had the closest thing to a vacation this past week. It is such a necessary thing to take time off of work and get out of town, even if just for a few days. Not only was this excursion necessary, but it was probably one of the best 5-day periods I’ve had in a long time. Here’s a quick (well after re-reading this, it’s pretty long and detailed) account of what made this such a great mini-vacation.

Wednesday, July 4 - Independence Day

Thanks to our founding fathers, there was no work on Wednesday. So what do you do on a Wednesday when no one has work? Umm, play softball. Obviously. Nearly 20 good friends got together to play a long, hot, and extremely fun game of softball at the Hamilton baseball fields. There were even a few home runs over the fence. It really brought me back to my days at good old Harford Park little league.

If you think that’s all I did on the 4th, you are sadly mistaken. I also went to Mike’s parents house where his mom had a smorgosbord of food waiting for us. After gorging ourselves, there were a few games of basketball, billiards, Guitar Hero, and even some weight lifting.

Then we headed over to Dustin’s parents house for, you guessed it, some more food and a killer whiffleball game. The rain couldn’t put a damper on the game, but it did make for some soggy fireworks. What a great day Wednesday was. Luckily Jared didn’t need to get out his “kit”.

Thursday, July 5 - Get Stuff Done Day

Thursday morning/afternoon was reserved for getting stuff done. In the morning I went to the gym, which was nice and un-crowded. Then I got my oil changed, cleaned my car, and met up with my mom for brunch.

That evening I drove down to DC to pick up K (not sure how she would feel about being mentioned on here, so we’ll go with the old initial name). We then made the trek down to beautiful and scenic Ocean City, MD. The drive was nice and easy, but the weather was somewhat foreboding. Dark clouds and drizzle marked the trip, but we were still hoping that we’d have better weather once we got to OC.

Once in OC, the weather still hadn’t cleared up. It poured while we were at dinner, but cleared up by the time we went to Macky’s. Macky’s is a great, very chill bar in OC and we had a great time, as usual.

Friday, July 6 - Beach Day

As you may infer from that title, Friday was spent almost entirely on the beach. Where we were staying, 125 street, the beach wasn’t too crowded. Although our area did get somewhat overtaken by a family with 27 pre-teen girls, causing us to move.

The weather ended up being as close to perfect as it gets. It was probably 80-85 and completely sunny all day. Highlights of our beach time included get pounded by huge waves which caused everyone’s shorts to have entirely too much sand in them, walking for what seemed like miles down the beach but only turned out to be about 20 streets, and some light snoring on the beach. Ahh, what a relaxing day.

After a few episodes of Man vs. Wild, my new favorite show, we headed out for dinner. After learning of Fish Tales’ hour and a half wait, we decided to go to my all-time favorite OC spot, Belly Busters. After a delightful dinner, we headed back to Fish Tales where I dominated all competition in the Ring Hook Game, I guess that’s what it’s called.

Saturday, July 7 - 777 Day

We were still at Fish Tales to ring in 777, but I think we were the only ones who even noticed the date.

After a long drive home to B-more and dropping K off for a family party, I went home and attempted to do something. What I actually did was fall asleep for about 3 hours. Fantastic.

Once my well-deserved nap was done, I showered and headed to Mike’s (a different friend named Mike) for the much-anticipated 777 party. The party was tons of fun and included some Big Brother Flip Cup, Cornhole, and of course, great friends.

Sunday, July 8 - I Can’t Believe I have to go to Work Tomorrow Day

Sunday morning I met my parents for church and then headed over their house for lunch. We feasted like kings on cheeseburgers, shrimp, fresh Eastern Shore corn, potato salad, cole slaw, and more. Ok, maybe not like kings, but I definitely ate a lot.

That evening, as per usual, we played a great game of whiffleball at the Pfeifer residence. I even hit a few home runs, after Jared started throwing “regular ones.”

It wasn’t until the drive home that I realized that in the morning I actually had to go to work. No more morning softball or mid-afternoon naps. But, I can’t really complain. This week was exactly how summer should be and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Big ups and happy birthday today to Stacey Pfeifer. Just think, this is the last birthday before Lil’ Ricky Ross comes into the world. Have a great day!

Just out of curiosity, who hit homeruns during the softball game?

Chris - thanks for the birthday wishes. I consider it a successful year when you haven’t nearly paralyzed me on my birthday.
