The Wire’s Grand Finale
Sunday, March 9, 2008 will be a bitter sweet day for all Wire fans. This marks the final episode of one of the greatest shows ever to hit the small screen. I want to save a proper eulogy of the show for after the last episode runs, but to hold us all over is this preview of episode 60.
Needless to save, all of us who have been watching this season OnDemand a week early were pretty disappointed to hear that we had to wait 2 full weeks for the last episode. The only consolation is that we will get an extended 90-minute show that David Simon has promised will fittingly bring an end to The Wire.
What’s making this even harder is just how great episode 59 was. The scenes between Michael and Snoop, Michael/Bugs/Dookie, Marlo’s scene in the prison, and the overwhelming sense that McNulty is going to go down so hard. I was literally sitting on the edge of my seat with my pulse racing for the full 60 minutes.
Although season 5 has felt a bit rushed to me, and I’ve been a little put off by the whole fake serial killer plot, this episode redeemed the season and has me anticipating an amazing finale.
It continues to amaze me how few people watch this show. I guess I can understand that the violence and language are too much for some folks. But we’re not talking about needless explosions or glorified killings like you see in Hollywood. The Wire has always used violence as part of the plot, not something extravagant or unnecessary. And even if season 5 hasn’t been as strong as the last two, I challenge anyone to name a current TV show that is better than The Wire.
Enjoy the season finale. There may not be another show this well done on television for a very long time.
