I Finally Bought a New Snowboard

This entry was posted August 1st, 2008 and has 2 comments.

Every year, for at least the past 5 years, I’ve said I was going to buy a new snowboard. And every year I ended up not buying one and just riding my trusty old Burton. It’s not that there was anything specifically wrong with that board, it’s just that it’s the board that I first started riding when I was 19, now 8 years ago.

The Burton I have been riding was also a very inexpensive, starter board. While I will not be competing in the X Games any time soon, it was definitely time to get a larger, nicer board that I can plan on riding for the next 10 years.

The new board, pictured above, is a Capita 156 and is part of their Outdoor Living line from 2008. Carrington at 3 Rideshop was nice enough to hook me up with this beauty at a very reasonable price. In fact, the price was so reasonable that I decided to pick up new bindings and boots as well. Like I said, I’ve been riding the same setup for the past 8 years.

Qualified Google Advertising Professional

This entry was posted May 7th, 2008 and has no nomments.

On Tuesday I took and passed the Google Advertising Professionals Exam. This was a pretty involved, 117 question exam that covers just about everything that goes into creating, running, managing, and optimizing a Google SEM campaign.

So, what is the significance of passing this exam, you ask? Well, according to Google,

“Qualified Individuals and Qualified Companies within the Google Advertising Professionals program have passed the Google Advertising Professionals Exam and have met other requirements in order to achieve this level of recognition. By attaining individual or company qualification, you’ll receive:

Where does Yahoo Go From Here?

This entry was posted May 5th, 2008 and has no nomments.

This weekend, Microsoft withdrew their offer to buy Yahoo for $33 a share. This MicroHoo merger has been talked about in many different forums by many different people for quite a few months. In the past few weeks, talks have heated up and culminated in Microsoft basically issuing an ultimatum to Yahoo.

Though Yahoo’s stock price dropped about 20% this morning, word is that Yahoo’s executive team celebrated the withdrawal of Microsoft’s offer. How others at Yahoo reacted to the news hasn’t surfaced yet, but reactions from shareholders have been mixed at best.

Now, the real question is, Where does Yahoo go from here? In what I think is a somewhat questionable move, Yahoo just concluded a two-week test with Google delivering ads on a small portion of Yahoo searches. The test was intended to show that Yahoo can earn more money by allowing Google to serve search ads for them. Both companies described the test as successful.

What Chris Walbert has been doing so far this Spring

This entry was posted April 30th, 2008 and has 1 comment.

In order to make up for my lack of posts over the past few weeks, I feel I need to justify myself to my faithful readers. Here are some of the ways I have been spending my time over the past few weeks while not blogging. I know it’s a bummer to click on a blog and see the same post at the top that’s been there for 2 weeks. I promise to do better in the future.

Playing social league sports, but having lots of rain-outs.
Thursday nights with the ABL (Abbott Basketball League) are always a lot of fun. Some nights the actual basketball being played is better than others, but it’s always a good time.

I was a little reluctant about joining a kickball team this season, but am glad that I did. I’ve spent the last 6 Saturdays at Patterson HS playing on an awesome kickball team. We’ve also had some good team-building excursions to Kislings after the games.

The Sore Losers are yet again displaying our dominance in BSSC football. We have won all 4 of our games, even though I almost lost the last one for us. Strangely enough we haven’t had any Saturday kickball rainouts, but have had 3 on football Sundays.

Last, is the Parkville men’s softball team. I am really looking forward to playing on this team, but our first 2 games have been rained out. Lame.

Congratulations Ben and Nikki

This entry was posted March 28th, 2008 and has 1 comment.

As is now tradition here on chriswalbert.com, I would like to give a congratulations and shout out to my friends Ben and Nikki Hughes who just had their second daughter. Lyla Faith Hughes was born on March 26th, 2008 at 11:50 am. She weighed 8 lbs, 14 ounces and was 20.5 inches long. According to Ben’s email mom, baby, and big sister Keira are all doing well.

Ben and I have been good friends since middle school and it’s pretty awesome to see him as a proud father now. It looks like he is continuing the Hughes tradition and building his own big family.

I’m not sure exactly what Ben looked like when his new daughter was born, but I imagine since he was both proud and excited he looked something like this (click the link to see).

Spring Forward Weekend

This entry was posted March 7th, 2008 and has no nomments.

There is nothing worse than driving home from work in the dark. Nothing.

It’s finally started to stay light out a little later the past week or so. To make things even better, Spring Forward is happening early this year. Don’t forget to set those clocks ahead at 2:00 am this Sunday, March 9.

As much as I enjoy the cold weather if it means I can go snowboarding, I cannot wait for the 65-70 degree days that are quickly approaching. St. Patrick’s Day, the unofficial beginning of spring, is in only 10 days and that means spring weather is right around the corner.

I’m going to check out the Body Worlds exhibit at the Maryland Science Center tomorrow, so hopefully I’ll have some cool pictures to post from that next week.

1 in 100 American Adults now in Prison

This entry was posted February 29th, 2008 and has 1 comment.

A report released today by the Pew Center on the States says that 1 in every 99.1 American adults are now incarcerated. That’s a total of 2,319,258 people in jail at the start of 2008. This makes the US by far the world’s leading incarcerator, whether you look at per capita or raw numbers. And for one more frightening statistic, the US spent more than 49 billion dollars in 2007 on our prison system.

Now, to bring it to a local level, here are some stats for Maryland. Of the 23,342 prisoners in Maryland, 70% are there for drug or drug-related offenses.

The New and Improved DustinPfeifer.com

This entry was posted February 25th, 2008 and has no nomments.

Not only is Dustin Pfeifer a good friend of mine and a champion BSSC quarterback, but he is also an excellent web designer and developer. Dustin and I went to school together and also worked in the marketing department at our last company for about four years. During that time we worked on a lot of projects together, many of which I am still really proud of.

I left that company last April and in October, Dustin decided to work for himself full-time and focus on his company, Dustin Pfeifer Creative. He’s already done some great work that you can see on his brand new site, DustinPfeifer.com.

200 Miles with Nike Plus

This entry was posted February 21st, 2008 and has no nomments.

Nike Plus Runs

With my run on Tuesday night, I officially passed the 200-mile mark since I began running with Nike Plus. Now, I have run a few times without my iPod/Nike Plus, including the 13.1-mile half marathon. So in all actuality, I hit 200 at the end of 2007.

Officially hitting this milestone, however, gives me a good reason to talk about how great the Nike Plus system is and how much it has helped me stay motivated and continue to run.

After a week in China, I arrived back in Baltimore on Friday evening. The trip was so much fun as well as being an amazing experience. This is a trip that I won’t soon forget.

So, now it’s back to normal life and back to work tomorrow. But for one last blog on the topic, I’ll share some of my favorite photos from the trip. Just click on the thumbnail to see the larger version.

There are more after the jump.
