Do Work Son - Rob and Big Season 3

This entry was posted December 20th, 2007 and has 2 comments.

It’s true. Most MTV shows nowadays just aren’t that good. Real World, for example, has the most obnoxious and dull-witted cast of all time. It is actually physically painful to watch these morons argue and sling 5th grade-style insults at each other.

Not to mention another horrendous show, A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila, which is quite unbearable to watch. I guess all you have to do to get a show on MTV is have lots of MySpace friends. That’s who she is, right? It’s amazing what passes for celebrity these days.

Now there is one exception to this rule; one show that stands heads and shoulders above the rest of the MTV lineup. A show that is not only hilarious, but makes you want to actually have the life you see on the screen. A show that delivers fantastic one-liners - Do work; Dirty Girl; Bobby Light; and so many more - and is also creative.

If you haven’t been watching Rob and Big over the first 2 seasons, now is your chance to catch on and enjoy.

Merry Christmas

This entry was posted December 19th, 2007 and has no nomments.

Here’s wishing all of you a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. 2007 has been a great year full of many new adventures and good times. In the next week or so I’ll have a year-end post to celebrate what’s happened in 2007 and look ahead to what’s to come in 2008.

I’m taking next week off from work (but not from blogging) and am really looking forward to having some time to relax and spend with my family and good friends. My shopping is just about done, and I still have a few holiday parties to look forward to.

Merry Christmas to all of you. Thanks so much for reading this blog, whether it’s every week or only once in a while. I truly appreciate it. Also, thanks to everyone who came to our 5th annual holiday party this past Saturday. I had a blast and I hope you did as well. If you have pictures, please email them to me so I can post some.

Here’s a special Christmas wish for all of you.

Top Albums of 2007

This entry was posted December 13th, 2007 and has 7 comments.

I know every music site or blog out there is putting out their top 50 or 100 albums of 2007 now, so I had to get in on the action. Instead of rating or ranking the albums based on which are the best, I’m just going to share the albums I’ve been listening to most this year.

If there’s something on the list that you haven’t heard, go out and get it. If there’s an album you love that I don’t have, please share it with me. I’m always looking for new music.

So, without further adieu, here are the albums from 2007 that I’ve enjoyed listening to the most.

Got my Plane Ticket

This entry was posted November 29th, 2007 and has 9 comments.

I guess this makes it official. Last night I got my non-refundable plane ticket to Shanghai. I’ll be flying American Airlines, leaving on January 31 and returning to the States on February 8. This will give me 7 full days and 2 half-days to spend exploring Shanghai and Beijing.

My flight there leaves at 7:40 am, goes through Detroit and arrives in Shanghai at 3:25 pm. But, with the time change, that 3:25 pm (China time) will actually feel like 2:25 am. So all tolled, I will be traveling for about 18.5 hours. Jet lag anyone?

Thanksgiving with Family

This entry was posted November 25th, 2007 and has 3 comments.

The best part of any holiday is the time we set aside to spend with family. Over the years, some of my best memories are of times spent with my cousins during the holiday season. I’ve been blessed with a large extended family, including 18 first cousins on my mother’s side. As I grow older, the relationships I have with my cousins also grow, even if the amount of time we spend together does not.

Growing up, my cousins Ryan, Ellen and Kathryn lived right around the corner from my family. Ryan and I were best friends and spent just about every minute we could hanging out, especially during the summer. Whether it was riding bikes through the neighborhood, building forts, or just exploring, there was never a boring day. Over the years as our lives got busier, the amount of time Ryan and I spent together diminished. However, the significance of that time never has.

During the most recent Thanksgiving and Christmas family celebrations, I’ve really been struck with one thought. My cousins aren’t little kids anymore, they’re all real people that are genuinely intelligent and interesting. I would be friends with them even if we weren’t related. These are the same people that I’ve spent so many hours goofing off with, but recently we all hit this point where we were able to relate to each other as adults. My cousins are now getting married and having kids of their own, going to grad school, and following their various passions in life.

Planning a Trip to China

This entry was posted November 13th, 2007 and has 2 comments.

No that’s not just a clever, metaphorical title, it’s actually what I’ve been doing over the past few days.

A couple of months ago, my friend Chrissy moved to Shanghai, China to take a job as the head of youth ministry for a church there. She’s anxious for friends to come visit, as I’m sure anyone who moves by themselves to another country is. So, her brother Ron and I decided we would plan a trip to go visit.

I’m really excited about the idea of visiting and exploring a country on the other side of the world. I definitely never thought this is a place I would go, but what an amazing opportunity. Plus, we’ll be there the first week of February, which is during Chinese New Year! This trip is definitely going to be an amazing experience and one that I’m really looking forward to.

The only downside is that there are so many things you need to do before you can actually go.

The Perfect Fall Day

This entry was posted October 31st, 2007 and has 1 comment.

I just took a quick trip to Giant to get some Halloween candy for tonight’s trick or treaters. Today is absolutely beautiful. 65 degrees, not a cloud in the sky, and a nice breeze.

Since I work out in the country a bit, and not in downtown Baltimore, I actually get to see trees on my way to and from work. It’s days like today that make me especially glad that I live in the mid-Atlantic where we get to experience four seasons. It’s been unseasonably warm so far this fall, but leaves on the trees are finally starting to change.

This weekend is the end of Daylight Savings. I cannot stand when it gets dark early. I’ll have to sit outside for at least 15 minutes every day this winter or I’ll go insane. At least this means that it will be cold enough to snowboard soon.

New MacBook with Leopard

This entry was posted October 31st, 2007 and has 2 comments.

At this time 2 weeks ago, I was impatiently anticipating the arrival of my new MacBook. For the past 5 years or so, I had been using an eMac. Sort of a less-expensive cousin to the much more popular iMac, the eMac was a rather short-lived product for Apple. I believe it only saw one generation.

So, back to waiting for my MacBook. I ordered it online on Sunday. I know, I could have easily gotten in the car, driven 10 minutes to my local Apple store and not have to wait, but for whatever reason, I decided to order online. So on Tuesday, a few days ahead of schedule, a package arrived at my office. I was obviously very excited and thanked the FedEx driver. To my great disappointment, the box I opened only contained the MacBook case, not the MacBook itself. Quite ironic, don’t you think?

So, after 4-5 calls to FedEx and another to Apple, I figured out that the shipper (Apple) did not label the box properly and my MacBook had been sitting on the FedEx truck for 4 days. The second box finally arrived on Friday, and Apple was even good enough to credit me $50 for my troubles.

Microsoft buys a Piece of Facebook

This entry was posted October 24th, 2007 and has 3 comments.

That’s right. The Wall Street Journal announced this afternoon that Microsoft has agreed to buy a 1.6% stake in Facebook for a cool $240 million. This values Facebook at a total of $15 billion. This move has been highly anticipated and talked about for months, but no one was sure whether Microsoft would win out over the likes of Google.

It is absolutely amazing how quickly the value of social networking sites have risen. Just 2 years ago, News Corp bought all of MySpace for $580 million. Even more recently, Mark Zuckerberg, creator of Facebook, turned down a $1 billion offer from Yahoo just last summer. While many thought he was either crazy, or just an egomaniac, that move is looking quite brilliant today.

So, what could make a social networking site like Facebook possibly worth $15 billion? First, as nearly every media outlet has documented, advertising on TV, radio, and in print continue to decline while digital media has been growing tremendously. Most analyst expect this trend to continue as the internet and other digital technologies become more and more a necessary aspect of our lives. This means that large companies will be spending big bucks online.

Baltimore Half Marathon

This entry was posted October 16th, 2007 and has no nomments.

After all of the drama surrounding the Chicago Marathon last weekend, it was a welcome sight to wake up to a beautifully sunny, chilly Saturday morning. The heat and humidity left Baltimore just in time for this year’s event.

I joined over 14,000 people, from other countries, 48 states, and of course throughout Maryland, for the 7th annual Baltimore Marathon. The weather was perfect, which helped fuel the tremendous energy that you could feel just walking (or running) through downtown.
