Race Results

This entry was posted September 9th, 2008 and has no nomments.

This past weekend was the Virginia Beach Half Marathon. As I mentioned in my last post, I trained for about 6 weeks for this one. By race day I felt good and confident that I had trained properly.

First, Virginia Beach on Labor Day weekend is a very interesting place. I had never been there before, so I’m speaking purely from this one experience. I’m not going to bash VA Beach, but I will say that the clientele was not of the highest regard. There were also signs posted all over asking people to refrain from activities that no self-respecting person would participate in in a public setting.

After a long, often traffic-filled, 6-hour drive, we finally arrived in VA Beach. About halfway through our trip the clouds broke and the sun came out and didn’t leave us for the rest of the weekend. The weather was great and the water was nice, despite the seaweed.

Now, on to the race. The half marathon began at 7:00 am and at that early hour it was already incredibly humid. There were a few points in the race, specifically between miles 6 and 9 where I wanted to stop, but at that point it’s a long walk back to the finish line. Luckily my perfectly-executed playlist kept me going until I hit the finish line during the final song.

Virginia Beach Half Marathon this Weekend

This entry was posted August 27th, 2008 and has 2 comments.

That’s right. This Sunday, August 31 is the Virginia Beach Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon. This will be my second Half after running the Baltimore one this past October. This course is supposed to be much flatter and faster than the monstrously hilly Baltimore course.

I’ve been training for the past 6 weeks or so and feel quite good about where I am in my preparation. I’ve started to have some pain in my shins and knees lately, but don’t foresee that being much of a problem on race day.

This Friday morning I’ll be driving down with Lauren and Andrea and meeting up with their friends at VA Beach. Hopefully we’ll have some sun for the weekend and not feel the wrath of Gustav.

200 Miles with Nike Plus

Nike Plus Runs

With my run on Tuesday night, I officially passed the 200-mile mark since I began running with Nike Plus. Now, I have run a few times without my iPod/Nike Plus, including the 13.1-mile half marathon. So in all actuality, I hit 200 at the end of 2007.

Officially hitting this milestone, however, gives me a good reason to talk about how great the Nike Plus system is and how much it has helped me stay motivated and continue to run.

Baltimore Half Marathon

This entry was posted October 16th, 2007 and has no nomments.

After all of the drama surrounding the Chicago Marathon last weekend, it was a welcome sight to wake up to a beautifully sunny, chilly Saturday morning. The heat and humidity left Baltimore just in time for this year’s event.

I joined over 14,000 people, from other countries, 48 states, and of course throughout Maryland, for the 7th annual Baltimore Marathon. The weather was perfect, which helped fuel the tremendous energy that you could feel just walking (or running) through downtown.

Fastest 3 Miles

This entry was posted October 9th, 2007 and has 1 comment.

Last night, I ran my fastest 3-mile run to date. My overall pace was 7:57 per mile, finally breaking that 8-minute mile time. Yesterday was a beautiful, hot, humid October day. After a somewhat trying day at work the run was exactly what I needed.

I decided to run to the song Let Down by Radiohead on repeat. It’s a beautiful song, but not something you’d think of as a running song. For whatever reason, I just wanted the repetition of that song over and over. And each time the song restarted, it was just as good as the first time.

A Day at the Track - Now with pictures!

This entry was posted September 4th, 2007 and has 1 comment.

To most of us, Labor Day signifies the end of summer. What better way is there is close out the summer than to gather 20+ of your closest friends for a day at the horse races?

Yesterday, a group of us hopped on the Light Rail with coolers in tow and headed up to Timonium Fair Grounds. Horses raced every 30 minutes from 1 pm until 5. I bet on almost every race but didn’t win a single one. I did, however, manage to only lose $20. Two of my friends won $70 each on one race, and a bunch of others won a few bucks here and there.

This was my first time actually watching and betting on horse races. It was an absolute blast. It’s just so much fun to hang out with your friends, cheer on horses and gamble. Check out Mike’s blog for some excellent pictures of the day. Continue reading A Day at the Track - Now with pictures!

100 Miles Run

This entry was posted August 1st, 2007 and has 1 comment.

As of yesterday, I hit the 100-mile mark since I started running again in January. During this time I’ve been using the Nike Plus system. For those of you who don’t know, it’s a chip and sensor that allows your shoes to talk to you iPod Nano and transfer your run data back and forth. Then, you can go to nikeplus.com to log and view all of your runs. It’s a pretty amazing tool and has made finding the motivation to go running much easier.

I used to dislike running. But now, the more I do it, the more I really enjoy it. That’s a tough statement for most people to understand. How could you like running?
