The Wire has come to an end. After 5 seasons, the show has aired it’s final episode and is now a piece of our history. I’ve read numerous articles, blogs and message board posts of people arguing their disappointment or satisfaction with the finale. I don’t want to look at or discuss The Wire in the small scope of one episode or even one season. And I’m not left with either of those feelings. When that familiar song played at the end of episode 60, I was left with a mixture of sadness that the show was over and thankfulness that it existed in the first place.
After a lot of thought, I’ve arrived at a few reasons why I think The Wire has captivated the loyal audience it has and why people have reacted so emotionally to the show.
First, The Wire does not allow you to be merely a casual observer. You cannot sit down for an hour, watch an episode, and then just move on with your life. You have to form an opinion. You have to feel something about the characters, the situations, or the circumstances.
There is no way you can watch an episode where the police major legalizes drugs in restricted areas and not feel something or want to discuss the implications of such a policy. To me, this was one of the critical plotlines in the entire series. It showed not only the futility of drug enforcement policies, but also how devastating drugs are; not just to the users, but to the community at large. To watch the citizens of those neighborhoods try to live their normal lives in the hell of Hamsterdam was heartbreaking.

Sunday, March 9, 2008 will be a bitter sweet day for all Wire fans. This marks the final episode of one of the greatest shows ever to hit the small screen. I want to save a proper eulogy of the show for after the last episode runs, but to hold us all over is this preview of episode 60.

It’s true. Most MTV shows nowadays just aren’t that good. Real World, for example, has the most obnoxious and dull-witted cast of all time. It is actually physically painful to watch these morons argue and sling 5th grade-style insults at each other.
Not to mention another horrendous show, A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila, which is quite unbearable to watch. I guess all you have to do to get a show on MTV is have lots of MySpace friends. That’s who she is, right? It’s amazing what passes for celebrity these days.
Now there is one exception to this rule; one show that stands heads and shoulders above the rest of the MTV lineup. A show that is not only hilarious, but makes you want to actually have the life you see on the screen. A show that delivers fantastic one-liners - Do work; Dirty Girl; Bobby Light; and so many more - and is also creative.
If you haven’t been watching Rob and Big over the first 2 seasons, now is your chance to catch on and enjoy.

That’s right. The best show on television can be viewed on Comcast On Demand right now. Season 1 will be available until October 28. Then, hopefully they will continue playing the other seasons up until Season 5 premieres in January 2008.
I watched episode 1 last night. Even though I’ve seen it before, I still love watching The Wire. This show is just so well written and real. So much so that it can almost be hard to watch some times. Season 1 is really focused on the drug game and the battle between Avon Barksdale’s crew and the police. The most notable quote from this episode is when Carver, a detective, says this about the drug war. “You can’t call this a war.” Why’s that? “War’s end.”

I’m sure just about everyone saw last year’s highly praised Dove campaign entitled “Evolution”. The short film depicts a seemingly average looking woman being transformed by makeup, lighting, and Photoshop, into a beautiful supermodel. For those of you who did not see it, or need a refresher, here’s the video:
Today, Dove launched their follow-up to Evolution with a short film called, “Onslaught”. Here it is:
As you can see, Onslaught shows the insane barrage of “beauty” messages that young girls receive on a daily basis. This campaign directly supports the Dove Self-Esteem Fund, with the goal of reaching 5 million girls by 2010.

There are only a few shows that are so funny that they will make me laugh out loud, even when watching them alone. There are even fewer that are worth talking about with your friends or quoting when you’re out. Flight of the Conchords is one of these shows.
This new show from HBO is about 2 guys from New Zealand, Bret and Jermaine, who come to New York to get their band famous. The show follows the sometimes inane details of their daily lives while they try to find gigs to play and women to love. Most of the funniest moments come in their normal conversations or their reactions to day to day life. Or, in their band meetings with their manager Murray or when they’re being stalked by their only fan, Mel.
